Facebook has a new policy that makes short messages (less than 85 characters) in a large font. Here's a place where you can test before you post.

It is, however, still possible to write short messages with the small font!
The trick is to write your message, fill window with spaces, then add your punctuation. It will appear on the following line but don't worry, it'll show up correctly. We're taking advantage of the fact that Facebook caluclates the size of the message before it concats the large space. It won't work if you leave off the punctuation though.
